Message 10684 - Posted: 12 Feb 2006, 2:23:21 UTC - in response to Message 10681.

Angus wrote (edited for brevity)-

I offered - have they responded directly to my very specific offer? Apparently not.

Moderator 9 - I can not verify your contacts with the project or if they responded, so I will take your claim at face value. That said, perhaps then you have your answer. If you asked and they did not contact you to take up your offer, that is a very good sign that they feel the issue has been addressed to their satisfaction.

Angus wrote-
Only on the forum, except for the singular report to David Kim.

Moderator 9- Actually, you are wrong about that. I reported it on three specific occasions and corresponded with both David Kim and David Baker on the issues. That of course would be in addition to the extensive discussions on the forum. Since I am supposed to take on faith that you have offered to fix the problem and they have not contacted you in return, you will just have to extend the same courtesy.

Angus Wrote-
Pursuing the unresolved issue with the forum, not attacking the messenger. You put yourself in the middle, so you have to expect to be the two-way conduit on this issue.
Moderator 9- I have no problem with the premise that I should bring issues to the project teams attention. While it may be your view of my role that I have "put (myself) in the middle", that is only partly true. I volunteered to help the project in a completely different area. They asked if I could Moderate the forums. I said I could help with that function.

While to be sure, any forum Moderator must exhibit a level of tolerance and patience beyond what we might expect of the average person, that does not mean that these qualities must be limitless. What I gather from our discussion is that you wish to test those limits, more than you want a resolution of these issues.

I have given you answers to every one of your questions. I have suggested you contact the project if you are dissatisfied. I have provided a means of off forum contact that you choose not to use. I have reported every issue you have brought to my attention to the project team, and provided you with their reply. You have provided many reasons why things should only be done the way you want them done, you do not seem to have any actual solutions to any of the problems that fit the model the project wishes to follow. Under those conditions, I can do no more for you, except say I am sorry you are unhappy.

Angus wrote-
Maybe they don't see a reason for a bunch of "me too" psots.

Moderator 9 - In my experience on these and other forums, people are not at all shy about chiming in on any issue to add their weight to the discussion. It is far more likely that most people can see that the issue of providing a way to contact a Moderator in private was resolved over a week ago. So what we are really discussing is, the fact that you are not happy with the solution provided. What the project has said is that they will wait for the software elements of the problem to be provided by the BOINC baseline software upgrades. As for turning on the reporting feature, they seem to have spoken on that point as well. While you may not accept it, the silence of the project team on an issue is just as communicative as a direct response.

So from my point of view this issue has been handled.

As I said below, EVERYTHING has been public on the forum EXCEPT one email to David Kim on another matter entirely.

Since you have been crowned with the authority to contact the project and report back, I have taken the public route for everything.

Perhaps you could report VERBATIM the project's replies on this issue (if they have indeed replied at all), not filtered by your personal views on this. Without that, we only have your interpretation of what the project is 'thinking'.

I do not accept silence as a reply.

Actually, as far as the project is concerned I am afraid you will have to accept silence as an answer, unless they choose to communicate with you further. I have no control over that.

As far as I am concerned, the tone, and accusatory nature of your communications are increasingly counterproductive to continued reasonable, or intelligent discussion and border on outright offensive. I can only assume that the project team may have been approached in the same manor, and that may explain their silence in your case.

Your accusations of bias on my part are unfounded and gratuitous. So until and unless that changes you will have to accept silence from me as the answer on this issue as well. While you are obviously not happy with the answers to your questions, your questions have been answered.

So-

Are we to believe that the whole discussion on this has been one way from you to the project, and you have not received ANY communication from them on the topic?

Or if they have replied, you can't or won't share those replies with the community? One would wonder why?

It seems very odd the the project people have and can take time to have private discussions with the out-of-project moderators, but never have the time to post direct answers to user concerns. Seems very odd, indeed. As if they are too good to communicate with mere users who provide the crunching power they need to do their work.

You are indeed correct that the relations are becoming strained - but only because of lack of communication from the project. Somehow you have the idea that I have communicated on this topic privately with the project and ignored any reply, although I have repeatedly told you otherwise.

Maybe I really do have to drive up to BakerLab myself to find the true story.

The anonymous reporting system for offensive or threatening posts is now working!

The reporting system for obscene or threatening posts should now be working correctly. Thanks to Project admin Keith Laidig for getting this up and running. The function can be used as follows-

In the bottom left corner of every post in the forums there is a series of small icons (buttons) that can be used to "Rate" each post. The last of these buttons is a small red box with an "X" in it that looks like this - .

If you click on that box, you will be provided with a reporting form. Fill in the requested information and submit the form.

This will generate a report to a Forum Moderator who will then review the report and take appropriate action.

{NOTE: No user specific information relating to the reporting user is provided to the Moderator when using this function.}

Comments concerning The Team Thread on this forum

The team thread on this forum was placed there specifically to provide a place for teams to advertise, recruit, and participate in friendly competition. From my perspective this thread is working well and has been received as such by the user community. I encourage people to put an advertisement there for their team if there is not one already.

The thread will remain in place and grow unless I am told by the project team that they no longer support the idea. So far they like it too. Neither they nor I consider the postings there to be out of line with the goals of the larger BOINC community or Rosetta. To that end if you have a complaint about the thread, then lets discuss it. This is not an issue that should be handled off forum.

The content of the posts is not, and will not be an issue for discussion. While clearly some of the teams have a decidedly political flavor or nationalistic theme, that is fine as long as they play by the rules of that thread when posting there.

I do check each team to see that it is a legitimate team. While many only have a few members thats fine too. After all they are recruiting. People should also feel free to have a team discussion thread in the cafe forum and provide a link to that thread in their team advertisement.

I took the time to move them instead of deleting the entire thread because a user asked me to put them in the Q&A boards. Since no one ever looks at the Q&A boards, I put them in the Cafe. I thought then and still think now that this was a better option than deleting all three threads outright. One of the threads is a Ralph question and the answer is in the FAQs at Ralph so it really does not belong in number crunching at rosetta. So the cafe seemed like a better answer than the "bit bucket" at the time.

I really do not like to delete peoples posts if I don't have to, but certain areas of the forums need to be kept in order, and neither I nor the other Moderators have a lot of time to linger on some of the more obvious organizational decisions. Sorry if it somehow seems to be out of place in the Cafe, but it is an area for discussing any topic.

By the way I only just found out that the message sent to users only shows where the post WAS not where it WENT, when it gets moved. I will add extra comment text to provide a path to the new location of the posts in the future.

CAFE = "Not usually worth reading for anything serious"

The only two serious forums are Science and Number Crunching

Yes, I'd like to speak with you. You have my email address? I have free calling in the US and canada if that is where you are located.
Thank you.

EDIT: On second thought I will contact David Baker at his office tomorrow.
This type of contact through a forum only works with full time mods and this catch-as-catch-can method is way to slow to solve issues in a timely manner.
Thank you again for your time.

How is this joking post, with an obvious smiley, considerd a flame/hate post worthy of being deleted?

I have a WU Here that has been Peniding for hours. This is not normal as usually they are granted immediately???

Probably because that computer doesn't meet the minimum marginal memory requirements to run Rosetta, with only 511.48 MB of memory. Also, you'd better take that box in and get it checked out - something obviously wrong with it if it can't report memory correctly :)

To Moderator9: From D. Bidanset; Thank you for looking out for my interests and go ahead and delete my original message. If you can contact "the team", please let them know that I have attached to RALPH and I have an account, yet RALPH has not downloaded a single byte of information to my machine. I do not wish to continue to send back failed work units. Oh, if you could fix my spelling error ("compution" should be "computation")in your post, I'd be much obliged. You asked me to let you know if I had heard from rosetta@home in a few days, I have not seen anything in my e-mails from them. Thanx, David

Ok I deleted the original post and corrected the spelling. As for Ralph, they are between test runs right now. There should be some work soon. I will contact the project guys again about your problem and see what is taking them so long to get back to us.

Please see post https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=1106#12272

Please create a thread in Number Crunching, where we can report crashed Rosetta WU's due to Ralph testing. And please move my two posts to that thread.

"Fuzzy"

I can do that but I am advised that the latest Ralph application is about to be deployed in Rosetta. The time frame I saw was within the next 48 hours. I gather from the reports that the current version of Ralph has fixed the Keep in memory problem. So such a thread would be very short lived.

I think you actually posted in the correct thread for this type of error.[
