Having given up my love, SETI, with as much difficulty as a love affair that will never work (we've all had a relationship where you break up and get back together half a dozen times), and having met my goal of 300,000 cobblestones in Einstein, I'm now turning my machines over to Rosetta.

Yes, I'm one of "those people" who started with SETI many years ago for the thrill of being able to make a contribution to science but got caught up in the heat of competition. I haven't read the boards here too much, but I sure do hope that this mindset is not shunned here.

To my mind, the competition for credits has brought more computers to bear on DC projects, and consequently gotten more work done for the good of all, than would ever have been seen if the "reward" of cobblestones was not integral to BOINC (or SETI Classic in the early days).

So, glad to be here, I've liked Rosetta from the start of my BOICing career. Hello to all.

Jim

Hi Jim and welcome aboard!
The Cafe here is a bit quieter and certainly flame-free - I'm sure you will enjoy it here!

Welcome Jim! We'll answer the "are we alone?" question soon enough. No need to rush in to that one. But if we can answer this "can we cure it?" question, THEN we've really achieved something that truely benefits humanity.

Looking forward to seeing your RAC and credits pass me by.

Jim...I just signed up with Rosetta today...There was a call for increased crunching power...So I thought i'd come on over and help.

When I heard the news that Rosetta was in need of additional crunching for the next couple of weeks, I thought I would answer the call and pressed the no new tasks button for my other projects. That will certainly help.

[cough] But that was the good news. The bad news was the experiment to get more crunching power out of my hosts for the next couple of weeks. I thought I would tap my hosts directly into the power lines leading into my apartment building. [cough!] It didn't work out too well. I was wondering what other experiments crunchers were doing to help get more crunch for the same buck from their hosts.

Gerry... when he said "more power"... he meant more COMPUTING power! :)

Welcome Dan!! Check out the project information index and my QA thread for a little orientation. And be sure to post any questions.
