Hi I have a question to all of you.. what is your opinion to the size of the tasks and the time you need for them? In my opinion its just too big, because i dont let my computer run for about 5 hours just to support rosetta@home!! I also would say that there would be more efficency if the people just could upload smaller bits and not the results of those huge tasks.. Sorry for my english.. I'm german |

Is your concern the file size? And the time it takes to download new work? Or are you concerned about how long it takes to compute a task? You don't have to leave your machine on for 5 hours at a time. The idea is to take advantage of spare CPU time when you are using your machine. How long is your machine typically on during a day? Most tasks complete a model is about 15 minutes, and then this work is saved. Then the begin another model. They continue to do this until you reach your preference for the runtime of a task. This is set in your Rosetta Preferences. If you make a change to the runtime preference, be aware that you must update to the project for it to take effect. Also, be aware that changing it will effect how many tasks BOINC downloads to try and keep enough work around for your machine. The Project Team is working on improving the checkpointing for the next release. Once this is done, even longer running models will have their work preserved every 5 or 10 minutes. So Rosetta will be able to take full advantage of your machine's spare time. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

no, its not the time i spend on downloading the files, its the time my computer needs to "solve" the tasks. I already tried to pause the solving prozess and after that i put "continue", but all the work my PC made before (the % it has already done)is set to zero. then i thought the same as you wrote and looked into my account here in BOINC to see if i got any point (the stuff for the ranking.. dont know how you call it in english) but i didnt get any points. the problem now is that i cant realyy finish the other tasks, because they take about 9 hours and i dont want to let my computer run for 9 hours... I already began with them but everytime i restart my computer, all the work disappered and i have to start again (from the beginning). Now i just dont know if these things, i already solved, are uploaded or not. Thats the whole problem.. hope i could explain myself well in english ;) |

Part of your doubt is whether your results are being reported back. I see from your results page that one just arrived. You can see that it used about 10,000 seconds of CPU time to complete (about 3 hours). That time does not have to all be done at once. Rosetta has a flexible work unit runtime. You can define your preference in the Rosetta Preferences (not General Preferences). 3 hours is the default, so it looks like you started with that. You mentioned 9 hours. This may have been the estimated time to completion at some point, especially given the current problem with the percentage incorrectly showing as zero upon restart. BOINC is still getting to know you and your machine, and early on it's estimates are not as good as later when it understands how you use your computer. I think you are mainly being thrown off by the little bug they have where after a restart the percentage is not calculated properly. They'll be fixing that shortly. But if you look at the Tasks tab in the BOINC Manager, the CPU time will show how much time has been spend on a task so far. Rosetta knows about your 3 hours preference, and will generally complete a task in about 3 hours... even if the estimated time to completion may not accurately reflect that at all times. Keep crunching! Your results are now coming in. And even if you don't use your machine a lot, you are still helping with the science of protein structure prediction. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |
