I don't think one needs previous permission from Microsoft in order to write programs for the Xbox 360; I think I heard somewhere that you can buy an SDK kit that will allow you to develop games yourself that would work with a stock (i.e. with the standard Xbox 360 OS, not Linux or some other OS of that sort like was widely used with the original Xbox, and that is probably being done with the 360 too) Xbox 360. I would think that this could be used to develop a port of the BOINC core client and Rosetta@Home scientific app to go with it; all that would be necessary would be for somebody to get their hands on a copy of the SDK to port BOINC, and ditto for the Rosetta@Home team to port the scientific application. |

Third party development of a BOINC client and a Rosetta app is easier said than done. That SDK is optimized for game development, not for deceiving GPUs into acting like CPUs. The similarity between Rosetta@home and your typical FPS likely begins and ends with the fact they will both run on a PC. Still, I signed the petition. I'm sure the folk in Redmond could make it happen, and would do so (promptly) if there was money or good PR in it. Rosie, Rosie, she's our gal, If she can't do it, no one shall! |
