Geeks are weird that way.

I find it pathetic that some people are moaning about a stupid screensaver this project is in BETA and has better things to deal with at the moment than some cosmetic surgery on a screensaver.

Its going to get one eventually but im certain its going to be on the bottom of the developers list

easy... not everyone that notes there is non is automatically moaning about it. normaly you note things you see during beta stage.
there are live projects without screensafer (like predictor), so i agree on being not top priority, though it seems to be a "crowd pleaser" in the long run ;)

The one quoted in the link sure was ;)

I never understood the fascination people have with screensavers. Some, adults no less, to the point of literally throwing a temper tantrum if a project doesn't have one or it isn't to their liking as has been seen many times in other project's forums.

You can a screensaver even if there isn't a fancy pretty one anyway.

A nice BOINC logo with the Project and WU progress on it.

Let them get on with perfecting the science application and then if they have spare crunching time, crunch together a screensaver.

A screensaver would be good to keep eeryone happy, but most of us would not use it. I am happy with the blank screen screensaver and the monitor turning off.

Total agreement here -- I would not be using the screensaver ...

a screensaver takes too much ram and processor time out of crunching. I will also go to blank screen. The only time i use a boinc project saver is if im in class and trying to recruit new crunchers. i have recruited so many to CPDN, LHC etc.. because of the screen saver. It pops up during a lecture and all those peeps behind me can watch what is going on. :-)

Still not sure what he meant by it wasn't time competitive with World grid and Folding@home? F@H work units take forever, and what the heck does that have to do with a screensaver anyway.

A screensaver, when they have time to make one, will attract a few folks. Like many though, I don't use screensavers. Want all my CPU cycles crunching science, not pretty pictures. I sure wouldn't worry about that guy moving on. David K has said, they'll have one eventually, but refining the science and the app should be first priority.

Besides, lack of a screensaver doesn't kill projects. Most folks do it for the science and the fun (competition) anyway. If the project is well ran and the science is good, folks will come screensaver or no screensaver. Maybe it won't reach the size of SETI, but it will do fine.

screensavers don't interest me, but after the project's up and running well, it might attract more crunchers if they add one. people pick projects for different reasons, so if it helps, why not?

I agree here -- it's more important to have a properly running project. Screensavers are mainly eye-candy that may occasionally attract more workers, however they are not the driving need.

Folding@home Beta has a screensaver.

Predictor had a screensaver with the versions 4.3x.
They got some problems and they needeed to revert to the version 4.28 which has no screensaver.

We know all that a screensaver is not the "best solution" to run a project.
But if people who would like to get a screensaver don't ask, never they will know if it's possible or not.
Sure, "lack of a screensaver doesn't kill projects" but a screensaver will not kill also a project (i hope !)
David Kim said "We will work on adding a screensaver", so perfect.
This way, everybody will be happy. :)

If There Is No Screensaver........

then you will detach from the project and go away!!!

I'm sure there is a hell of a lot of other things to do on a BETA project than make a pretty little screensaver

Imo: screensavers won't affect project survival, that depends more on good science & good administration. And especially on good feedback, which this project has already demonstrated.

OTOH screensavers do attract people just like stats do, though neither one has anything to do with the science. The original SETI@Home had a screensaver and so do the majority of BOINC projects, so it's hardly surprising that people expect them.

Seems to me that mass computing projects probably need the masses, not just the "elite". And isn't it one of the benefits to involve more people in science in this small way, leading to appreciation and support of same? If some eye-candy is part of the hook, it seems cheap at twice the price...

(And using, say, a 5 minute timeout on the screensaver lets you enjoy it without "wasting" the CPU overmuch.)

So bashing pro and con aside, I'm glad there will be a screensaver eventually; and meanwhile understand it's a lot of work and won't be the highest priority. Maybe this is another area where developer volunteers could be useful.

Obviuosly you're talking to me ?
Read again what i wrote, you need.

If some people wish a screensaver AND if the team is ok to add it, what's the problem for you ?

@Nightbird. Relax. It seems obvious to me that they were quoting the original poster, not you. Although the response was a bit caustic and unneccessary, the lead line was from the thread title, given by the original poster.

TO SUMMARIZE all the responses.
- Lack of screensaver will not kill the project.
- A screensaver will help to bring in new users, especially some of the more causual participants.
- While not a high priority, the developers will add a screensaver when it is practical to do so in the development cycle.

Eventually, there will be something to make everyone happy.
