Maybe the new Health Care Plan in the Us can address this too! Seriously this has been a problem for a very long time, profits over patient care will always happen as long as the drug companies are in charge of what they make. If however we could find a way for the drug companies to 'discover' the drugs and someone else produce them, then we might have a chance to fix this problem. Right now there are literally hundreds of drugs coming off patent and their generics will be on the market asap. This means profits will go down on those drugs so they will stop producing them and make new versions that they can then patent and make a fortune on!

Maybe hte answer was in the article itself...it said the drug cost about 98 cents to make but the newer version was $184.00 and his Insurance Company would not foot the bill for it. Maybe the answer is for the Insurance Companies to pressure the drug producers to 'do the right thing' for the patients.

your idea of one place developing them and another place making them will never happen in our life time, unless hell freezes over.
its all about making a profit on the new drug.
there is all the r&d costs they want to get back, plus all the fees for the FDA to approve the drug and most of all the money spent in business lunches to peddle the new drug to the hospital and the pharmacy reps and the doctors.
after this initial cost they will start making money.

even over here with price control, new drugs can cost considerably more than the old ones. it's just business, got to make a profit or they wont survive. then again there is price gouging for new products.

[rant on]I totally agree we HAVE to fix the process!! Why should a drug rep be able to influence what meds I get? That just seems counter-intuitive to my dealing with my health issues! My getting better depends on the RIGHT drug rep visiting my doctor, that just seems wrong!!! Make a bad impression and the drugs I get are not the ones I need, or make too good of an impression and I get sicker and my insurance pays more for stuff I don't need! Waaaay too many variables there!!

Why does not each Hospital sit down with its own Doctors and decide what EVERYONE gives out? Why should my doctor have to meet with each drug rep and get 'wined and dined' or bribed or whatever and I suffer the consequences?! Oh I know no one would EVER be unethical here!! Wrong again, money is at the root of this problem and too many people are making it or trying to make it!![/rant off]

Yeah that is how I met them, they were trying to sell drugs to the EMS people and I was in the fire station that day working, actually it was several times and several people. They thought if they could convince the paramedics, the paramedics would then try to convince the doctors what drugs worked better or best. Unfortunately/fortunately it doesn't work that way in our City. Fortunately because the paramedics were totally unprepared for the presentations and unfortunately because the reps stopped coming by!!

You don't buy or show interest they stop coming.
Besides as paramedics, if you guys get called out during a presentation, she loses time. She should have tried working on the department head of the paramedic/emt division. Paper pushers have all the time.
I think paramedics get a bit bored or overwhelmed with all the "data" about the new drug. I would think they were more interested in how it works and what side effects there are and how to treat them. But I also thought they had to follow protocols set by the doctors? So then why hit the paramedics if they have to follow the doctors orders. Bad drug rep. tsk tsk. But if was a female rep, then at least the guys got a bit of sunshine in their day. lol

As I said they wanted to go thru the back door to the Doctors, they thought that by convincing the paramedics, I was just a firefighter that happened to be there, they could get them to convince the Doctors to buy their products instead of whatever they were using back then. You are correct in your guess about having to go out on calls, but the paramedics have a system where they can say 'send the next closest we are busy' and unless it is a life threatening call they send someone else. So no calls during the presentation but no luck for the sales people either, LOTS of good detailed info exchanged though!! WAAAAY over my head and I was just enjoying the scenery!! We went thru this a few times over the years but the paramedics never did buy into whatever drugs they were pushing. I always told the drug reps 'you will never get a yes if you don't ask'. They were always 'too busy' to go out after work though, said something about having to be in another city the next day.

That must have been some good scenery!
I thought the paramedics got their supplies from the county hospital?
And when does a paramedic have time to talk shop with the doc?
Either one of them are quite busy.
Good try and good scenery for the guys.

Good try and good scenery for the guys. lol

Oh the 'scenery' was VERY nice indeed and this is now MANY years later!!!

As for the supplied the medics do get most of their supplies from the local hospital but do have regular meetings with the Doctors to iron out any problems or situations that went well or bad, the meeting are every 2 weeks with each crew at the minimum, more often if a pattern problem develops from either perspective. Like when I was assigned to the ambulance one day and we ran a heart attack and we did cpr and the medic gave all the drugs etc, I just handed him the purple top thingy etc, and drove to the hospital. Well when we got to the ER the Doctor DEMANDED that I be the one to tell her what drugs were given and why. I tried 3 times to tell her I did not give ANY drugs before I told her to wake up and ask the person that did give the drugs and stop asking stupid questions! She was PISSED that ANYONE would talk to her like that in HER ER! Needless to say we had a meeting that afternoon, with MANY people, where she apologized and said she had made a mistake in that she did not realize I had on a dark firefighter shirt and not an orange paramedic shirt. First time anyone EVER saw her apologize and the beginning of her becoming a better Doctor, they later told me!! It was also the last time I had to work on an ambulance for the whole shift, although that was not discussed at the meeting, which I did not mind at all!!! Cameras can be VERY revealing, they had a camera in the ceiling that recorded everything, including me trying to tell her nicely that I was not a paramedic and that she should ask the paramedic standing next to her. Then when he tried she kept cutting him off and started yelling at me to give her her answers! I was an angel and she was a real pit bull devil on camera! Oh the patient DID survive but it turns out it was because the Nurse did the right things, not the Doctor. The Doctor was too preoccupied with me to do some things or the patient would have died. That came out in the meeting too but as they got into all that I was excused.

Yeah I have actually met a few of those, they can be VERY hard to resist!! They can actually be quite good salespeople too!

And that is how the drug companies get their product into the pharmacy or doctors office.

Bad drug rep. tsk tsk. But if was a female rep, then at least the guys got a bit of sunshine in their day. lol
